Lord Shanker is believed to have once manifested in the form of a Jyotir Lingam so enormous in form that its beginning or end were not traceable. The Linga means symbol. It is a symbol of the existance of life, the start and end of which is untraceable as manifested by the enormous Jyotir Lingam. In tantra, it is believed that this symbol in this form attracts and radiates more of positive energy and power and that is the reason why we find Shivling in the temples.
