Shamshad Begum was one of the gems. Beautiful voice and a media shy person who was never heard of getting into any controversies or fights. A kind of rare gem. Everybody has his/her own favorites. When it comes to voice, my choice had always been Lata ji. But there is no denying of greatness of Shamshad ji. She had mesmerized the whole generation of the time with the beautful voice and her own style.
May the almighty bless her soul with eternal peace.

Shamshad Begum's voice was very sweet but the personal touch was missing. If you are a patriot and you hear Lataji's song "E Mere Watan ke logo, Jara Aankh mein bharlo paani, Zara yaad karo quarbani.." it is sure to raise goose bums on you. I have them right now while writing this answer and every year especially on Jan 26th and Aug 15, I get them over a dozen times and this is not the only song.

Shamshad Begums voice was like Ban phool (Flower in the forest ).
my fav song is..
Bahare aaj paigam e mohobaat leke aaiyee hai
badi muddat me ummidon ki kaliyan muskurayee hai
gam e dil se jara daman bachakar hum bhi dekhenge...

Teri mehfil me Qismat aajmakar hum bhi dekehge
ghadi bhar ko tere najdeek akar hum bhi dekhenge................
