Historically in English speaking countries women take their new husband's family name (or surname) after marriage and the children of the marriage are then given their father's surname. This practice means that women inherit their surname from their father, and change it to match their husband's. This is not compulsory but only optional. In many cases, women retain their maiden surname even after marriage. In most of the cases, they take the surname of the husband. In a few cases they retain their maiden name and add surname of husband. My opinion is based on Goan customs, specially Roma Catholics.

Till marriage she is under the guardianship of her father; but after the marriage the full responsibility is in the hands of her husband. As husband is everything for her after marriage a female has to change her surname.
