RAC which stands for reservation against cancellation is used specially by the Indian railways where when you book a ticket and its on waiting list, then you have a chance to cancel the ticket and all your fair paid is returned to you, but if you have an RAC ticket then if you cancel some fee is cut. Another important aspect of the RAC is that, it ensures you of a birth.

If you are listed in the waiting list you cannot board the train at all. If listed in the RAC, you can board the train and sit in the allotted side seat, until, if you are lucky, the TTE finds an empty berth for you.
