Obama appoints couple of Indians in his top admindtrative posts. Is it recognition of the growing ability of Indians globally?

Yes indeed as he has done so to acknowledge it further to his past admissions about Indians being the leading the world economy!!

I would imagine he appointed them on the basis of their ability and qualifications to do the job and not on their nationality.

Not really Good Citizen, just plain ol' party politics :D Other minorities such as Chinese, Russians & Vietnamese tend to push 4 greater integration w/ their own respective homelands. Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines had a Chinese cabinet more or less (Chinese Filipinos), and these guys made China an integral part of Philippine economy.
Indians differ here in sense that once he becomes a Republican, he's no longer Arunachalam but becomes Armstrong :) Indians are preferred globally because as a people we don't have an agenda of connecting w/ our motherland as do other ppl's. This makes us more desirable for administrative jobs worldwide.
