RSVP is 'Repondez s'il vous plait' ,a French phrase, meaning thereby 'respond,if you will please' -- a form of etiquette. We also have been using this , a decade or so ago , more commonly on envelopes containing invitations, indicating that the invitees can respond by stating whether they will attend or not .This advance information enables the other person to assess how many will be attending and make necessary arrangements for seating , food and so on.
