Will our IITs (Centers of Excellence) remain as such if one in three professor posts remains vacant forever?

There will be serious problems in these institutions of excellence if this problem persists. Even if each IIT has its own Board of Directors in the persona of eminent personnel, the Central Govt funds these institutions to a great extent by financial allocation that is made in each year to pay for the staff, its upkeep and to subside the student fee. One has seen in the last 10 years, how insipid bureacrats of the rank of Joint Secretaries who were nothing more than cohoots of the then equally moronic HR Ministers like MM Joshi and Arjun Singh played havoc with these institutions, by attempting to meddle with every aspect of their administrative and admission matters. The biggest hold they have is in the fixing the pay structure of the teaching staff.
We have to remember that, inspite of all the strides made other wise, the outlook towards these teaching staff stems from bureacratic prejudices. Obviously, you cannot attract talented ex-alumini of the same institutions to take up th ...more
