In 1904, Ambrose Fleming invented the diode and in 1907, Lee De Forest invented the triode, both of which were thermionic devices comprising glass envelopes and electrical heaters causing sub-atomic particles called electrons to be released and controlled. When applied with knowledge and components developed by Ohm, Voltaire and others, these devices could be put together to form electronic circuits as distinct from electrical and mechanical machines. Marquess Guglielmo Marconi, an inventor of Italian and Scottish-Irish ethnic background deserves special mention here, not only as a Nobel Prize Winner in 1909, but as the man who invented radio! Within a few short years, many ships of the World rented services from his company to include the new \'wireless telegraph\' using Morse Code with operators employed by the Marconi Wireless Company. One of these ships was the \'unsinkable\' RMS Titanic.

The designers were William Pirrie, a director of both Harland and Wolff and White Star, naval architect Thomas Andrews, Harland and Wolff\'s construction manager and head of their design department,[6] and Alexander Carlisle, the shipyard\'s chief draughtsman and general manager.Carlisle\'s role in this project was the design of the superstructure of these ships, particularly the superstructures\' streamlined joining to the hulls[citation needed] as well as the implementation of an efficient lifeboat davit design.
