Well Slumdog Millionaire did that on it's merits even though it was made by Fox Searchlight which specialises in British made and independant films, a subsiduary of American company 20th Century Fox.

Bcoz they are not boillywood movie actually they r hollywood movie and having indian story.
So they have different window to enter to the oscars. while bollywood movies enter in Best Foreign movie category only.where so many movies across the world compete for one trophy..
