Funeral is the darkest time for the loved ones, so people use black since it is the darkest colour to show that they also bear the sorrow

In our place peoples wear white cloths which gives indication for peace.
black colour is a symbol of sorrow.

Not in india but here wears white at home mostly by ladies.may be black is treated as symbol of sorrow
