First of all, let me make a clarification. Reliance Fresh is not a Single Brand Retail, but a Multi Brand Retail. The difference between Single brand and multi brand retail is that, a single brand retail sells only one brand like Titan, Seiko,Bata, Reeboke, Nike ,Puma et. A multi brand retail is the usual "supermarket" which sells various brands under the same roof.
However, the difference does not make any difference, as to your observation about with regard to the small sabziwala and Gupta stores. There is a Reliance Fresh store close to my house. After they finished interior work and stored the merchandise, it was ransacked and vandalised by the activists of the Marxist Party. The local traders were in the forefront of agitation saying that Reliance Fresh will wipe them off from the scene.

I agree with you. This is what I, too, have been telling everyone. No one can shut down small retailers. For the simple reason that in small retail shops the owner is, himself, present and can give personal touch to the service of his customers. This is something which the corporate super markets can never do. Their unpolished employees (including the store manager) are least interested in customer relationship.
Add to this facilities like free home delivery and monthly credit. All this makes the small store walla a winner

Companies with FDIs may not be interested in giving the "chandaa"/ donations to local small-time politicians. They would rather pay a heavy fees than go around doing the business in cahoots with local bureaucrats at a fraction of the prescribed fees. That is the problem and they are the people, who would actually be affected. Besides, no one cared how many cashiers's jobs would be lost with ATMs, no one cared, how many stenos's jobs would be lost with laptops, then why this love for the small shop keepers?

It is all political drama not even a single retailer will have to close down and govt will gain a lot in way iof VAT and income tax like reliance in mumbai we have big bazzar and spencers here in delhi and they have not made any dent in the sales of small retailers ninty five percent of indians want to buy without a receipt which means without paying taxes
haldirams and bikanerwala have a huge number of branchesl but that has not resulted in closing down of any halwai shop
