Helium has a low density and will provide good lift helium is an inert gas, and because it doesn't want to react chemically with anything else, it doesn't present a great deal of risk when it is used.. Helium is a relatively rare and expensive natural resource, and because helium is heavier than hydrogen it can reduce a rigid airships useful payload by more than half, but heliums inert non-flammable nature makes it the only practical lifting gas for manned lighter-than-air flight.
