In Ramayana/Mahabharatha there is no mention of sati, In fact after the death of husband in some cased their used to be remarriage with out any socila stigma attached

the sati is not so old phenomenon. actually it started when muslims started attacking India and defeating the locals and killing mthem they have resorted to mass kidnap/mas rape of hapless Hindu ladies. Just to escape this sati system might have come into existance(I know this will be reported)
