A great Parliamentarian he is: very secular minded person: Jyoti Basu was born on July 8, 1914 at Harrish Road in Kolkata. He graduated with honours from the Arts Faculty of the Presidency College in 1935. He went to UK to study law. Returning to India, he started practicing law.

Basu became the opposition leader in 1957 in West Bengal Legislative Assembly. In 1977, the first Left Front Government was founded in West Bengal and Basu became the Chief Minister and remained the Chief Minister till 2000. That's not true. He was a great leader and was truely secular. But he was disciplined soldier amongst his Party. He never went beyond his Party's decsn even if it goes against his own views. Despite coming from a very rich family, he struggled all along his life for the upliftment of backward class people, workers, farmers etc. He was a freedom fighter too. He was a king maker and truely respected by all, right from Indiraji to Monmohan singhji. Let us all hope and pray that his soul remains in peace.
