Q.

With tribals in Orissa being forced to "return to Hinduism" is this an indication that we cannot choose our religion but have to follow the one we are born into??

What the tribals are being forced to do so in Orissa is very sad indeed. The people forcing them to do so are acting like bullies. Freedom to choose any religion is a person's fundamental right.

If the religion is chosen without any compulsion of fear or favour, it is good, but it is observed that in many cases some of the unscrupoulous institutions take advantage of the poverty and poor conditions of some of the tribals and convert them. They do not help those who do not convert. This is not humane. If you are from kerala you might have read an Indian Express survey about Attapadi which said that the people were getting converted only for money and material and nothing else. THIS SHOULD BE AVOIDED AND PREVENTED. The government should get the accounts of all these so called religious institutions who a receive hundreds of crores of rupees in the name of religion and spend it specifically for converting the gullible
