When India won independence in 1947, the area was known as Bombay state; it was divided on linguistic lines in 1960, creating Gujarat in the north and Maharashtra in the south. Almost all major banks, financial institutions, insurance companies and mutual funds in India. India's largest stock exchange Bombay Stock Exchange, the oldest in Asia, is also located in the city. After successes in IT in the neighbouring states, Maharashtra has set up software parks in several citiies.
HOW MUCH OF THE ABOVE IS THE WORK OF MAHARASHTRIANS? Raj Thackrey. Can you answer this?
Gemm, ya need to understand the political undercurrent in this full episode.
The Thackerays are political good for nothings. They only speak the language of initmidation and disrespect. When they were in power they did nothing worthwhile for Maharashtra. Infact Maharashtra owes its development and growth to the captains of Indian industry who have made Mumbai their home. And how many of these are local Maharashtrians. And where do the Thackerays figure in all this. Nothing except the useless goondaism. The main reason why Thackeray is pissed with the North Indias is because as of today they form the petty vote banks (yeah the ones who fall and vote for petty politicians). And not surprisingly they are as petty as ever to vote for their townie brothers namely the Mulayams and Mayawatis. This is nothing short of the erosion of Thackerays lowly vote bank. Well even before independence Bombay was a presidency and a port which meant that it attracted migrants from all parts of India. Bombay was built up by the hard labour of everyone who lived there. It was much later that Bombay was joined to Maharashtra. In fact there was a debate those days whether it should be given to Gujarat!!
Talking of locals only the kolis or fisherman are locals because Bombay has been created out of joining seven islands of fishing villages.

So, he hit upon a very low grade idea of targetting North Indians blaming them as the root cause of the misery of the locals, a statement which is not supported by facts. As you said, whether it is Mumbai or other cities or towns like Pune, Nagpur or Ahmadnagar, they have not come up purely on the efforts of the local community, a fact that holds true not only for Maharashtra but even for other states like A.P, Karnataka, T.N, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana. It is this parochial attitude of the earl
