The State of Nagaland was formally inaugurated on December 1st, 1963, as the 16th State of the Indian Union. It is bounded by Assam in the West, Myanmar (Burma) on the east, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam on the North and Manipur in the South. The State consists of seven Administrative Districts, inhabited by 16 major tribes along with other sub-tribes. Each tribe is distinct in character from the other in terms of customs, language and dress.
The History
The ancient history of Nagaland is very obscure. Little is known about what is now Nagaland, including the origin of several large sandstone pillars at Dimapur. British rule was established over the area by the 1890s, and headhunting, then a traditional practice, was banned. The Naga territory remained divided between Assam and the North East Frontier Agency after Indian independence in 1947, despite a vocal movement supporting the political union of all the Naga tribes; one faction called for discord from India. Naga was state earlier.....It was divided in four states ........Arunachal pardesh....Assam.....Nagaland and Manipur..............It was somewhere attached with Myanmar.....!
