We had the techonology of smelting ores to get metals at a very early stage.. The Iron age, and copper age refer to the periods in which these metals were extracted using technology very similar to what is being used today., As a matter of fact the Ashokan Pillar in delhi is made of a special alloy and till date it has never seens a spot of rust.

Metal were in use in earlier times also. The ancients manufactured their weapons through specialists. True the steel factories were not there. But they knew how to get the ore and how to go about it at their level of knowledge. The iron beam at Khutubminar is exposed to all weather and no rust forms on it. Think of our bridges. We need to paint them to protect from rust. So we have to admire their skill to manufacture sophisticated things with limited knowledge and limited machinery.
