Thomas is a common given name for males. It originated from the Aramaic language. In the New Testament the designation was applied to Judas Thomas, the second Judas of the Apostles, hence the meaning "twin".

"Tom" or "Tam" is a common abbreviation used in Scotland. The name is sometimes abbreviated as "Thos" in signatures. The female versions of this name are Thomasina, Tamsyn, Tamsin, Tasmina, Tasmino, or Tammy.
