Another fact is that in arithmetic there was a sum wherein a monkey used to climb an oiled bamboo 3 meters in first attempt and recedes down 1.8 meters subsequently .... and in how many attempts can he climb a Bamboo of 18 meters......my point is that why should a monkey climb an oiled bamboo instead of other tall trees......and on this qsn I was heavily thrashed by my Mathematics teacher in my school days......

These examples are used to make young students take more interest and imagine a situation better, thus making maths a fun thing, as far as possible. I think we shouldn't look at such examples from a strictly practical angle. Many such 'impractical' situations enumerated in maths problems also help us to associate certain techniques with the examples thereby making us remember the method used to solve them.
