Many expected Maria Sharpova to become the top woman tennis player and to win many grand slam titles. What really went wrong to her? Your views?

I think she got caught in the limelight of glamour which distracted her away from focusing on the game which got her there. It has happened with many other stars in all kinds of sports that they have failed to maintain the focus & step on forward once they are in the big league. Thats the difference between a star player & a true champion which she has failed to understand!!

1) There are a lot of similarities between Maria Sharapova and Sania Mirza.
2) Both attracted a lot of attention in the beginning for their good looks and power tennis.
3) Both have been very successful also initially for a few years.
4) Steadily thereafter, they could not make it to the top like before. Still people love both of them to be there on top. It may sound strange to some extent. Well, people have their own expectations from their idols.
5) One of the reasons for their failure to hold on to the top spot may be due to the intense competition from the younger players who simply swam the tennis nowadays. It is simply too hot there at the top resulting in a fast burnout.

Since the last few years women's tennis has suffered in viewership because of lack of strong top 2-3 players. Carol Wozniaki was world No 1 but has never won a grand slam. The Williams sisters participate in very few WTA tournaments and their performance has been erratic. Vera Zvonereva, Li Na, Schiviane have all won grand slams but not been consistent performers. Maria no doubt, is the best player, on the day opponent was in good form thats all.
