Q.

My family's gotra before marriage was Dhanvantari and my husband's family's gotra is also Dhanvantari but as per our parents our families are not related because we are from different parts of Bengal.
Question: If these MPs from Harayana manage to get the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 amended so that same gotra or swagotra marriage becomes illegal , does it mean marriages such as ours will also be deemed illegal?

Gotra in Hinduism is same for all regions of India. So even if you and your husband belongs to different parts of Bengal the aspect remains that both of you belong to the same gotra. Marriages between members belonging to the same gotra are prohibited in Hinduism simply because that it is believed that they have descended from the same family tree. Only when the tree is within two to three generation old it may have some scientific consideration and it seems in your case it is more than many many generation old link. As such there is no moral or scientific values against such a marriage. And I do not think the MPs are in the parliament to heed such nonsenses from the khap panjayats , who themselves are as per the rulings of the courts illegal.

How many MPs does Haryana send to Parliament? Even if all of them speak in one voice and endorse, what these Khap Panchayats are demanding, they can't have the Hindu Marriage Act amended.

Though I respect the sentiments of people disallowing marriage in the same gotra but perhaps the reason for this lies in some mismatch astrologically or mismatch perhaps on health grounds.
But i am pretty sure that even if this becomes a law ( which I think may be difficult) but I see no reason at all why the marriages already done in the same gotra should be termed illegal ! I am pretty sure the law of our country will never entertain such a plea!

Dear Joyoti: I read recently in newspapers parliment has okeyed "sagotra" marriage way back.

There is a thinking that sagotra(same gotra) means they are brothers and sisters, parliment after a very very long debate have okeyed there is nothing wrong in marrying in sagotra reason:

Childrens will acquire the same gotra of father, completely ignoring the gotra of mother, so in thousands of years their will be so many combinations and simply telling the same gorta one cannot assume brother and sister

This depends of the social acceptance , same Gotra marriages are not allowed in North/central or western India .If such situation arises and usually the Mama of the girl adopt the girl and she have the Gotra of Mama .But in Delhi specially the NCR region this concept of Gotra is very rigid.Still remember a family from Delhi refused the marriage as the gotra was same though the boy's family is from Madhya Pradesh.
These amendments are effective from the act date and not from a previous date , so the marriages dine before that date won't get affected by this act.
Problem arises when someone report this and file a case against such marriages.

As per hindu law marriage in SAGOTRA is not allowed.......when lord bramha created 11 manasputra to expand the mankind of the earth then they didn't show their interest in social life, so he created 14 prajapatis(rishis) and 24 women for the expansen of mankind.........the first three were manu from where the word MANUSYA has come......apart from this Kauchhasa, kasyap and bharadwaj were the three main saints from where the gotras have come.......the whole world's gotras have come from these three Rishis and rest all are their generations which are given different GOTRA name as per their KARMA......that so why , marriage in SAGOTRA is not permissable but not debared or illegal........
