There was however a restriction for Gandharva marriage it was acceptable only among Kshatriyas. Gandharva marriage and Love marriage are not one and same. Gandharva marriage means a secret marriage without following any of the prescribed marriage ritual. It was performed by mere exchange of garland. Whereas marriage by self selection of partner (which is refereed as love marriage) was as prevalent in the past as it is in present. In fact women were even given the privilege of self selecting a life partner by the system called swayamvar. However resistance to 'Love marriage' was there even in the past as it is in the present.
