Commenting on the origin of psephology as a subject and a career, Premchand Palety, CEO, Centre for Forecasting and Research, says, It dates back to 1936 when George Gallup got right the prediction for presidential elections in the US. In India Dr Bhaskar Rao, Chairman of Centre for Media Studies was the first to use surveys to predict election outcomes. Prannoy Roy popularised it in the media.

Rajeeva Karandikar, former professor, Indian Statistical Institute, opines, There are no courses in psephology. People who have background in one of the two: statistics and political science and have aptitude for the other can pursue psephology.
There is no university or private institution that offers a course in psephology, though it is taught as a part of political science programmes. Palety adds, Knowledge of political history and social dynamics of different states (in the Indian context) is a must.
