When the churning of the ocean had taken place, all the things that came out were taken away by the devs and danavs, but when a pot of poison came no body was willing to take it, so all the danavs and devs prayed to lord siva, who is always there to be at his devotee's side in times of need, willingly drank the (vish) poison, and that remained in his throat, which became blue, so the name NEELAKANTA

Jab samudra manthan hua tab baki ratno ke sath usme se halahal vish bhi nkla tha. Jiske taap se dharti, jal aur aakash ke saare prani tadapne lage they. Tab bhagwan Shiv nein us vish ko pee liya tha par usko apne gake mein rakh liya, neeche nahin jane diya. Us vish ke asar se unka gala neela pad gaya aur tab se unhein Neelkanth bhi kaha jata hai.

According to the mythological stories, Lord Shiva drank the poison that appeared from the 'Sagar Manthan' (churning of ocean). On drinking the poison, his throat turned blue and from that time onwards, Lord Shiva came to be known as 'Neelkantha' (One having blue throat).

During Saagar Manthan, the sea produced a deadly venom called Halaahal.. The venom was so deadly that it was making life hell for all the lokas.. Shiva took the poison and gulped it, and kept it in His throat.. did not fully drink it.. the poison was very hard so his neck became blue.... Since then Shiva is called Neel Kantha.
