Katha kuch yun hai..Durvasha rishi ne Indra ke hathi Airawat ko shraap deeya tha , ish she ush ka swet rang ka nash ho kar kala pad gaya tha ( Airavat samudra manthan she prapt hua tha aur ish par Indr ka adhikar tha ), Ush ne is sthanb ke pass ke Paveetr kund main snan karne she shrap she mukt hua tha. Ish Mandir main dakshin Bhartiy Chola- Parampara ke anushar Indra _ Airavat ki puja ki jatio hai aur ish Mandir ko Airavateshwer bhi kaha jata hai.
Shamb Puran main sandarbh hai ki Surya Putr YAM ko apne hi pita she shrapeet hone par Rakt-Pitt ki bimaree huyee thi jish ki jalan she woh dukhi the, unho neb hi ish kund main snan kar Airavateshwer ka pujan kiya tha au rush rog she muktee payee thi.Jahan YAM ne SHIV ji ki pooja ki hai woh sthan world Heritage main sweekreet kiya hai , Ishi karan ush kund ko Daksheen Bhartiya YAMKUNDEEY kahte hai.

The Temple is a veritable art gallery of Chola architecture and sculpture. This temple is the 22nd in the series of Tevara Stalams i. Legends: Shiva appeared here as a huge column of light (Jyotiswaroopam) in front of Parvati, who had meditated upon him, and she embraced him
Temple: This temple has two prakarams and occupies an area of less than an acre. A majestic Rajagopuram crowns the entrance. An image of Shiva and Parvati in embrace is enshrined in the temple. The Natarajar shrine and the Sarabeswarar shrine are important here. Appar prayed to surrender at the feet of Shiva, which was granted at Tirunallur nearby. This temple was reconstructed in stone during the period of Sembiyan Mahadevi and the early years of Raja Raja Chola I (1000 CE). Inscriptions from the period of Rajadiraja Chola II (1166-1182 CE), Kulottunga Chola III, and the Vijayanagar Emperors are found here
