Hope the below information helps you to sort your problem out.

Equity: Ownership interest in a corporation in the form of common stock or preferred stock. Equity means the minimum ownership of itself that a company can give to you or to any individual or to a company.

Like you own your house, company is owned by someone, generally more than one person called shareholders because they all put money into it and they all share the common that the company will grow and give profits {which is the purpose of a non-NPO (non profit organization) company}.

When you buy the equity shares of the company, you become the owner of the company, however small.

By holding an Equity share means that you are the owner of a part of a company (this ownership could be .00000000001% or anything like this) and hence the company will share its profits with you (depending upon your amount of ownership) in terms of Dividend that it distributes to the shareholders.
