The thorns (actually prickles) are part of the stem of the rose plants. They help to protect the plant from animals who might eat the plant. They are like natural 'barbed wire' of the plant doing no harm to the plant itself but deterring others from causing harm to the plant. They work as natural protective mechanism for the plant.
