It takes courage to brave the roughest of weathers,
be it the towering oak,
or the fragile blossom.
It takes courage to understand and recognize the effort put in,
and applaud it with an open heart.
Those who don't suffer anxieties,
related to failure, misfortune and difficult times,
those who fight,
fall,
rise, ...more

For me real C O U R A G E means an extra second of thought ... Most of the most courageous acts go unnoticed in this world. There are no claps or applause for them.

As a young child I saw one bird fighting with a snake to save its little one or a frog swimming in front of a water snake to save its own young ones.

A mother standing outside the bunker with a gun to save her children from hordes of cattle running helter skelter (due to bombing of Jodhpur) on Dec.3rd,1971 (1971 war with Pak).

Where one of us spares an extra second more to take notice is where the courage gets acknowledged. An unacknowledged act of courage is ALSO an act of courage, we notice or not.

Hi Muktha,Courage of a Man is an unexplained ability of a person to face or fight a stonger force than him.It can be also mental ability meet challanges. The mental strengh is Courage,Courage cannot be compared because the size of the Challenge ,Odds or force will be diffent in each case. What Gandji and Jhansi did examples of Courage. But Jhansi Rani's courage need to be counted more great or bigger because, she being aWoman and to face the 1st struggle of Independance was more severe than compared to what Ghandiji challenged.During Ghandiji's struggle the Britsh were almost at the point of decision of leaving India.Still the struggle required was severe/Every person has some courage and he fights against challenges he faces in life. But some have some inborn abilty to face bigger challenges more compared to many. This make them famous and known to others.

Both are forms of courage. The strong oak stands tall and bravely faces all the ravages of weather. It never bends and buckles down under the pressure of the storms that come to destroy it. Big Braveheart !
As for the fragile blossom that opens in the snow, it is courage of a different kind. It has already been defeated and buried down but it never loses is courage. It bravely ventures out again and again to come up trumps and burst through the layers of snow that has crushed it . Finally it succeeds in braking the ice and rising up again.Little Braveheart !

So courage is irrespective of one's physical strength. Mental strength holds the key.

True COURAGE is cool and calm. The bravest of men have the least of a brutal, bullying insolence, and in the very time of danger are found the most serene and free.- Shaftsbury

If you can't be a pine on the top of a hill
Be a scrub in the valley, but be the best little scrub on the side of the hill
Be a bush if you can't be a tree,
If you can't be a bush be a bit of the grass
And some highway happier make.
If you can't be a muskie, then just be a bass,
But the liveliest bass in the lake.
We can't all be captains, we've got to be crew,
There's something for all of us here.
There's big work to do and there's lesser work, too, ...more

The most glaring example of courage and conviction was - Jesus Christ in the movie "The Passion of Christ".

Governer asks Jesus - If you ask for fogiveness, I have the power to grant.

Jesus replies in all his pain and wounds - You have no power over me.

I saw this movie more than five years back. But it keeps on haunting me till this date. Courage is epitomized by facing adverse situations and standing tall in that. It would even take courage to face the court by a guilty, who otherwise held a high position in the society.
A towering oak tree during storm faces as much adverse condition as much as a fragile blossom in the snow, but both have been "genetically" developed to survive these conditions. Courage would be when a Tulip blossoms in Indian summer. :-)

Courage is what we are with in and not what we would like to show off or espouse to the outside world. The courage to stand by your decisions, the courage to speak up when you know a wrong has been done irrespective of the consequences, the courage to stand up for your own when others tend to invade that territory - in short the courage, that spirit within that stands tall and don't wither whatever may be the circumstances.

In accordance with my opinion , courage is acts with big heart....not compromising one's own integrity, the act of balancing to reach at the top, willingness to accept defeat at times....sharing haopiness of people around u, being ready to help others even at the hours of crisis...I remember a couple of years back , when a major earthquake came in some remote part of the chinese territories, a group of around twenty thousand from air forces jumped from an altitude of 20000 ft who never knew whether they would get a place to land or not....the PM of that nation reched at the epicentre within 30 mins of earthuake to keep a hand on the shoulders of the people who has lost their lives , a teacher in her twenties lost her life in her fourth attempt to save the last school kid, a mother was found dead in state of covering him infant baby , protecting him, so that he didnt get hurt wid the anticipated debris falling upo them, and the army personnel subsequently found a note wid the baby " Son, ...more

Courage obviously refers to being brave under any adverse circumstances. The towering oak tree n the fragile blossom, both seem to be quite courageous. But I would like to add something about the towering oak tree, there's a saying in hindi"bada hua to kya hua, ooncha ped khajoor, panchhi ko chhaya nahi, phal lage ati door".Of course,it has nothing to do with courage.
