Q.

Just now read the appeal by Selvi J.Jayalalitha, educating all and sundry, what a masonry gravity is, how safe the MullaiPeriyar dam is just like the Roosevelt Dam in the US, the Joux Dam in France, how the reservoires of Idukki dam can "simply" contain the waters heading down in case the strong, as good as new, MullaiPeriyar Dam fails. Shall the Central Govt now come out with a similar appeal, educating all, how safe is the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Station?

TN just plays a political game of double standard on these two issues.

Kerala doesnt need the permission of Jayalaita or hate mongering politicans of tamil nadu to build a new dam in its own territory. Kerala doesnt even need the permission of central government except an environment clearance. Mullaperiyar is NOT an inter state river issue, there is no inter state river involved. It is only a inter-state contract for supply of kerala water and lease of kerala land. Safety of the people must get the first priority. A dam 114 years old in an earthqauke prone area is a HUGE risk, no expert opinion is needed to know that. Only commonsense is needed. Kerala has to seek permission for lowering water level from the supreme court, and go ahead with the project of new dam.
