Q.

It is read in the news paper today that the Kerala Government is very serious about starting its own airlines called Air Kerala (I guess mainly to cater the gulf travellers) in order to make the air travel affordable for common people. If it becomes a reality, then will it increase the competition thus forcing other airlines whose charges are exorbitant to cut costs? Your views?

It is going to be a joint venture between the Air India & Kerala tourism. I would welcome such a move as it would be better for the travellers who would get more options to choose from & any healthy competition does bring some fall in the prices which should be even more good for the travellers!!

Another white elephant in the making..! Do you remember about Kairali, the Shipping Corporation of Kerala's first and only merchant vessel, which disappeared without a trace? An old, dilapidated vessel , ready for scrapping was purchased from Rotterdam and inducted into the public sector venture.
The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation is a reality. Does it serve its intended purpose truthfully and efficiently? It has already eaten into the capital, with the Govt pumping in more and more capital every year. The road fare is much more than the rail fare. Then why doesnt the KSRTC take a decision not to raise the passenger fare every time the price of diesel in increased, so that the road fare is affordable to the people?
More than 50% 0f the operation cost of airlines is the cost of jet fuel. Do you think the Govt of Kerala will subsidise the price of jet fuel to make air travel o the Gulf countries, affordable?

Since it will be a Govt run Airlines and mainly catering to gulf area as you correctly guessed, in all probabilities, they will maintain the cost on lower rate.
