Q.

It has become common for intellectuals to question d relevance of d death sentence, whenever d court awards it. Their main arguments is dat d death penalty has failed to deter ppl from committing heinous crimes. Just becoz a punishment does not prevent some perverted criminals from committing brutal crimes, should we den stop punishing criminals??

Those intellectuals are NOT intellectuals, who question the relevance of Death Sentence.
Their 'main argument' can be put before them as "If death Penalty has failed to deter ppl from committing heinous crimes ... think what will ppl do in absence of any fear of death penalty."

In a civilized society, the emphasis must be on deterrence and reformation, not on REVENGE.
Any punishment is VIOLENCE and has an element of REVENGE in it. In primitive societies, people are stoned to death, arms imputed, crucified, beaten to death, hacked or shot to death.....right before the public including children. Such acts hardens peoples mind and promotes violence. Violence always perpetuate more violence. Hanging is a taking ones life, it is violence. Killing the killer doesn't give back the life to the victim, so the justice here means vengeance. This is the reason why sensitive and wise people are against crude state violence called hanging to death.
