Rabindranath Tagore specified hindustani raags to his poetry. So did Subramanya Bharathi. Bharati specified both hindustani and carnatic raagas to his poetry. Although I don't know much about Kazi Nazrul Islam, I thought he did not specify any raagas to his poetry. But I have read some of Kazi's poetry translated into English by others. In fact, Mr. Preetish Nandi had translated some of his hall mark poetries. Tagore did the translations himself after the receipt of The Prize in 1913. Tagore was the most brilliant and creative poet. He almost never created a pot boiler. But Rabinddra Sangit is somehow appear to me as a very poor depiction of his creation. A simple town's church choir would do better. While Bharati is being sung by carnatic exponents, I have not come across any classical maestro singing Tagore's poetry. Case in point here is Mira's compositions. Every vocal maestro sings them starting from the peerless M.S. I don't even know there is a group singing called Nazrul geet. ...more
