Religion started as means to discover and reach God, but it has become bigger than God and sometimes even holds God as its hostage.

No------Never.....Can't.......Religion paves the way to realize God and His blessings to human race.......Religions are like various rivers with different paths.....But the Destination of All the Rivers are the Ocean.....i.e.,...GOD.

You may take it as God is the ultimate destination. A religion, which are basically a set of some principles, is a road made by our Rishis or Seers ( like engineers make virtual roads in the country to make us reach from one point to other in an easy way) through which we may reach to our destination. But we may also make our own road / or choose a new path to reach to our destination if we feel the pre-set route of the said road is not suitable for us. Budha, Guru nanak, Saibaba, Kabir das, Tulsidas all had set their own ways to reach to the ultimate destinations. But the basics of all were same- be faithful to oneself and to others.
