The BrahMos as being developed by DRDO in collaboration with Russia is based on the P-800 version which has a shorter range. Recently they have successfully test fired the Block II Version after a lot of initial hiccups regarding its accuracy.

The Indian Version has a flight range of 290 km, with a pay load of 200-300 kgs, with a speed of Mach 2.5 to 2.8 (1 Mach = 1236km/h), travels at a cruising altitude of 15 km with terminal alitude as low as 10 mtrs.

Indian Army would have Three Missile Regiments equipped with these missiles based on MAL (Mobile Autonomous Launchers), which facilitates easy shifting of positions, at the time of preparation, then moving to the launch location and relocating it at another site to avoid aerial detection.

India cannot at present go for a long range version of the same as Russia is restrained for transfer of technology under the MICR (Missile Technology Control Regime).

Incidentally the name is derived from a combination of Brah(maputra ...more
