I don't think it is crime or offense in public places but could be offense in some religious places. Since you started, do you think our great grandparent ever kissed. It seems to me it is of western origin.

if mother kisses her child in public is nsot an offence.but if the kiss is lustful and initiate sexual urge in public this is pun\shable under indian penal code.
