After marriage when they went to seek blessings from Gandhiji, they asked who be known after whom. Then Gandhiji suggested them to keep his surname ; thus Indira did not write as Indira khan, nor feroze had to add the prefix Pandit...
It was not a political reason, but it gave a strong political support to Gandhi.

His real name was Feroze Jehangir Gandhy of Parsi origin which was later changed to Gandhi from Gandhi. No idea, if it was for some political compulsions.
