John L. Sullivan, (The Boston Strong Boy), is recognized as the world's first heavyweight champion under the Marquess of Queensberry rules, a code of popularly accepted rules in the sport of boxing, when he defeated Dominick McCaffery on August 29 1885 in Cincinnati, Ohio
