Kanpur is one of the most populous cities in the north India and the most populous within the state of Uttar Pradesh. Area wise Kanpur is the 5th largest city of India . Kanpur is located on the banks of the river Ganga and is an important industrial centre. It has an area of over 1600 km and had a population of 4.13 million in the 2001 census & now it is approx.6.0 million in 2008. Kanpur is the biggest city of the state of Uttar Pradesh. With a shape of an irregular quadrangle, this city lies cuddled on the banks of the holy River Ganga, or Ganges. Kanpur has a very dramatic and tragic history. The city gets its name from the Hindu king Kahnpur. The city had very little significance until 1765 when the Nawab of Awadh, Shuja-ud-Daulah was defeated by the British at Jajmau. The whole province was transferred to the British under a treaty signed by the Nawab of Awadh. The British believed the city of Kanpur to be of very strategic significance, since the Grand Trunk Road and the road from Jhansi to Lucknow crossed there, and utilized it to the utmost.
