Former Indian prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda floated a political party called the Janata Dal (Secular), popularly known as the JD (S). The party won in a paltry 28 of the 224 constituencies in the 2008 assembly elections in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in 110 constituencies, which is thirty more than the number of constituencies in which their closest rival, the Indian National Congress (INC) won. BJP leader B.S. Yeddiyurappa is all set to be sworn in as Karnataka's chief minister. The BJP has created history by beating its rivals in the southern part of the country for the first time.
