Previously dowery was seen as token of respect towards bride by their familymen. At that time existing social system requied such as a tool to provide girl some benefit from her ancestral property as she has not actual right in such property as such. That dowery was considered as her stri dhan too.
But it is evident that if any system is not changed with lapse of time it causes disturbance in society. Now a days dowery is EVIL which should be eradicated from society. But at the same time by some section of society it is considered as status symbol.it become a means by wealthy family to secuere relation in Sound and good families.women in society is also not as independent as required to irradicate this problem. These are some basic reason why it stands today in society.
It is extermli bad as impulses various problem in society as increase corrution, lowers dignity of woman in society, causing female infanticides etc.

Dowry is just a gift which is given by the bride's father as a token of love but it is not a burden. gifts are meant to be valued rather than priced.

Binding to give or take 'dowry' is illegal. However giving gifts to the bride or bridegroom is not illegal. Thus giving gifts at the time of marriage as a gift to make the new couple assured of settled new beginning is perfectly legal, ethical and a token of love.

Forming an Act is not everything ! People is supposed to abide by the Act. They must be conscious and morally bound to follow the Act. Lack of education is also a cause. Overall it could be said that dowry system is a curse to our society ! It should be ended forthwith with a view to social reformation and development.
