Actually the dowry system was started with a motive of giving a security blanket for married women in case of marital problems or abandonment by husband which was considered as an emergency fund to be used by the bride in need. This is given by bride's parents or brother. This is normally not in cash but in the form of jwellery or immovable property.
But along with time, people started taking wrong advantage out of it and slowly the actual meaning and purpose also changed. Now it is considered as the price of a groom and the bride is harrased for it.
Earlier women do not have any other support other than her own materialistic assests, so dowry was a support to her. But now parents provide good education to their girl child and most of the time she earns for herself, so there is no need of dowry. But this is not understood by my parents of a grooms. Now ,some consider their son as a blank check to be cashed on his marriage.
So, its a bad practice at present.

Dowry system has its both pros and cons.

Some see it as devil because the parents of bride are sometimes harrased by the bridegroom for money.

Looking at the other perspective, dowry is like a share of property given to a daughter before her marriage because she will not get her share of property later according to hindu system of property division.

So I think Dowry is good as long as people are not harassed and blind about money. But people should think it as a kind of voluntary gift to a girl child by her parents and it should not be taken to the levels of harassing her parents for extra bucks

There is a saying that girls are to be sent with a lot wealth to her husband's house.Kanya dhan is to be coupled with SRI DHAN (SRI means lakshmi ).Dowery should be a willing gift & NOT a threatening compulsion.
