The answer is the same. Islam being one of the youngest of all major religion has more modern thoughts. But I do insist it all reflects the nature of moral values prevailed at the time of the Holy books and nothing else. God has nothing to do with this. If Islam is the only ancient book that says ".. then marry only once" it is good. But it is also to be noted that Indian Muslim men are against enacting law against polygamy in Islam. If Islam preaches monogamy why do you oppose it?

Polygamy did not disappear in modern societies, but it just became practiced outside the bonds of marriage. It may be under the label of individual choice and freedom, but is happens with no commitment, rights or responsibilities put on the shoulders of either party.

Among the numerous misconceptions about Islam, is that it is the only religion that permits polygamy, and that Muslims are the only people who might practice it. On the contrary, polygamy was never prohibited in Judaism and Christianity, until a few centuries ago. However, when examining the teachings of both faiths, neither Christianity nor Judaism provided clear guidelines and regulations in regards to this practice.

In contrast with Judaism and Christianity, Islam dealt with polygamy more clearly. It provides legal requirements that res ...more

A form of marriage in which a person has more than one spouse at the same time is called polygamy. In Islam, polygamy is allowed for men (making it polygyny), with the specific limitation that they can only have up to four wives at any one time. The Qur'an clearly states that men who choose this route must deal with their wives justly. If the husband fears that he cannot deal with his wives justly, then he should only marry one.

Its also called Plygamy..... I think so..!!
Polygamy means a system of marriage whereby one person has more than one spouse. Polygamy can be of two types. One is Polygamy where a man marries more than one woman, and the other is polyandry, where a woman marries more than one man. In Islam, limited Polygamy is permitted; whereas polyandry is completely prohibited.!!
Now coming to the original question, why is a man, allowed to have more than one wife?
2. The Qur'an is the only religious scripture in the world that says, "Marry only one".!!
The Qur'an is the only religious book, on the face of this earth, that contains the phrase 'marry only one'. There is no other religious book that instructs men to have only one wife. In none of the other religious scriptures, whether it be the Vedas, the Ramayan, the Mahabharat, the Geeta, the Talmud or the Bible does one find a restriction on the number of wives. According to these scriptures, one can marry as many as one wish. It was only l ...more

Why bring in scriptures? We all know which community indulges in polygamy the most ! By the way, am not for or against polygamy. It is the personal choice of persons involved !
