Abortion may be natural or induced. It may be naturally due to infections and harmonal reasons, external/mental trauma. It may have to be incuded in case of foetal abnormility, risk to maternal health etc. There is legal support for abortion up to 18 weeks provide that it is done with valid medical grounds.
FOETICIDE is intentional killing of the foetus, this is done epecially to get rid of female child. it is punishable act if proved and a social crime too.

Any Termination of Pregnancy which is not Natural or Accidental but induced in contravention of Provisions of MTP Act 1971 is Abortion or Foeticide. Call it Criminal Abortion in early pregnancy and Foeticide in late Pregnancy once the conception has become viable. Both are punishable under sections of IPC 312 to 315. Moreover if there is Female Sex Determination and then causing selective termination, it is Punishable under PNDT 1994 (Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act 1994).

Abortion might sparingly enjoy the support of the MEDICAL COMPULSIONS but foeticide is blatantly the killing of embryos not endorsed by the Indian Penal Code.
