'Retaining Kashmir' and 'Special Status given to them are two separate issues.
Kashmir opted for joining India when Maharaja Hari Singh of the undivided Kashmir, consented the accession of his state i.e. Kashmir, to India. Pakistani Razakars (actually Pak Army) had snatched away the part of Kashmir we know as POK. Nehru promptly went to UNO with the Kashmir matter. UNO, in all fairness of things, suggested for a PLEBISCITE. Nehru knew that people of Pakistan will vote for joining Pakistan or an independent nation. And will surely not vote for joining India. So Indian politicians started saying that Kashmir is an integral part of India and there cannot be a Plebiscite. Thereafter Govt of India gave a special status under article 370 of the Constitution to Kashmir. No body from outside can purchase land in Kashmir. Also everything is sold at susidised rates. Jammu & Kashmir are part of India.
The people in the valley have come under the influence of the jehadis.
They are cutting their own feet under the influence of Pakistani sponsered violence.
