80% are Hindus, where 30% are veg but have milk and milk products, rest 50% from the Hindus have non-veg - eggs, chicken, mutton (goat meat), fish and seafood too. Some Hindus also have beef although the stats is not known.
The low caste people today, were native people of India or the first settlers who use to have any kind of meat available and it was after the Indo-Aryans brought Hinduism and agriculture that the cow was regarded special. But now some hindus have started to have beef. Yes, beef is cheaper than chicken.
Fish is popular among the coastal states. Not popular in North India.India is big and diverse you cannot fit all the people in 1 category. For e.g. many Hindus in states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu have beef and upper caste Hindus in Bengal and Assam have fish. so exact percentage cannot be given.
