Most of the Atacama Desert is located in Chile, which is 600 to 700 miles (1,000 to 1,100 km) long from north to south. Its limits are not exactly determined, but it lies mainly between the south bend of the Loa River and the mountains separating the Salado-Copiap drainage basins. To the north, the desert continues to the border of Peru. Parts of the Atacama are also found in Peru, Bolivia and Argentina.
