Rashbehari Ghosh was a lawyer by profession, who is also famous for his philanthropic. He was born in 1845, in the Khandaghosh village of Burdwan district in West Bengal. He had an excellent educational carrer and topped all his public examinations from FA to MA. He was a very successful lawyer, but he donated greater part of his income for the benefit of the society.much of it by way of charity and endowments. He also contributed a sum of ten lakh rupees for scientific studies at Calcutta University . He is also the man behind today's Jadavpur University, as the this came up from the educational institution at jadavpur, to which he contributed another thirteen lakhs. He also joined Congress.
He won several honors like the Tagore Law Professorship at Calcutta University, an honorary DL from Calcutta University, a seat on the Bengal Legislative Council. He also won knighthood in 1915.He died in1921.
