You can raise the same question before Dr. Zakir Naik , of Islamic Research Foundation in Peace TV, who is a veteran in such matters for a healthy discussion or debate or both...!

Sir ,
Kindly allow me to adress this question in present context
Polygamy is exception and not general rule .The exception is made for many reasons, but lets note only one here
In Western society, it is common for a man to have mistresses or multiple extra-marital affairs. Women in this case are degraded to mere sex objects with absolutely no rights; theyre usually on the losing end of such liaisons. The same society, however, cannot accept a man having more than one wife so that women can retain their lawful rights and lead an honorable, dignified, and respectable life.

If every adult American man married only one woman, there would still be more than 25 million women in the United States who would not be able to get husbands, at least considering thataccording to latest statistics10 percent of the American population is gay! Thats close to 30 million people!
Thus the only option for a woman who cannot find a husband is either to marry a married man or to become public prope ...more

In the days of Quran , due to perpetual wars there were so many widows and unmarried women due to the death of thousands in the war front . So if some one can give shelter , food and care to a widow , it is a Godly act and as such approved by Prophet Mohamed . In today's scenario where so many young Muslim girls are highly educated and qualified to take care of themselves , this will not be accepted by theses highly intelligent and qualified ladies as kindly and Godly act . To my knowledge the % of males among Muslim faith indulging in polygamy has vastly reduced which is quite welcome . I think that answers your query that the old polygamy act does not hold good today .

It is. It was justified then because most males after the age of 17 were conscripted &rushed into the frontlines to fight off the Romans, the Persians, and also a host of hostile bedouin tribes w/ alliances to Persian empire. So the male population was quite abyssmal.

And in ancient times AND EVEN MODERN TIMES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES- INDIA FOR SURE, a single, powerless woman w/o influence is often seen as a money making tool by WAY too many "brokers". Satyajit Ray even made a docu-film about it amidst a setting in tribal India. So marriage was seen as the most obvious social security.

Even then, u just couldn't walk in to someone's house , pay her father 50 skakeels and take her @ your own, but your first wife HAD to solemnize & officiate the wedding w/ second wife, and a second marriage HAS to be done w/ the FULL approval of first wife.

Is it justified today? Who am I to say how ppl should live....in Orissa, u have society's where a single female share multiple husbands... ...more

It is very common that religion being used for all the wrong purposes when it could have helped to enhance the lives of weak and the oppressed. Most of the times it would be the priests or clerics from a religion who would be misinterpreting the Holy Books to sustain their own interests and misleading the others within the community. The latest controversy about a comment from the senior Muslim cleric Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musaliar on polygamy shows that this trend still continues. Kanthapuram reportedly have said this: A second wife is biologically justified. Womens menstrual cycle prevents them from sexual contact for 5-6 days.!!ggl His statement came in the backdrop of a state law reforms commission has come out with a draft bill to check polygamy and divorce by Talaq. The bill seeks that monogamy shall be the rule and that marrying again during the lifetime of husband or wife is an offence!!!
