People from different religions or even different sects in Hindu religion perform these called, religious rites after death, on days starting from 1 to 41, bet' 11 and 17, being most common. You can give the reason as: "to perform the religious rites after death on .........day (s). Please accept my condolence.

Are you sure! Read your question again !
People do not do pooja on 16th day after their death, because they are already dead ! It is others, who are alive, who do the pooja for the moksha of the dead person\'s soul !
Also, if I am correct, it is the 13th day after death - which is the last day of the funeral ceremonies - when all relatives and friends are invited for lunch and dinner - in honour of the dear departed soul.
You can say \" Please grant me leave to attend the Pooja on last day of the Shraddh Ceremony \"
